The purpose of this examination is to protect the safety of the public. The examination is designed to determine whether candidates for licensure as registered nurses have the minimum level of knowledge needed to practice competently, knowledgeably, and safely at an entry-level.

The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is a nationwide examination for the licensing of nurses in the United States, Canada, and Australia since 1982, 2015, and 2020 respectively.

NCLEX Practice Test 2024

NCLEX examinations are provided in a computerized adaptive testing (CAT) format and are presently administered by Pearson VUE in their network of Pearson Professional Centers (PPC).

Start Sample Tests

The NCLEX is computer-adaptive and items are selected based on each candidate’s ability. The majority of test items are written at the cognition level of application or higher. These questions require a candidate to utilize problem-solving skills in order to select the correct answer.

NCLEX Exam

NCLEX examinations are developed and owned by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. (NCSBN). To ensure public protection, each board of nursing requires a candidate for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination: NCLEX-RN for registered nurses and NCLEX-PN for vocational or practical nurses.

Type of Questions

Candidates may be administered multiple-choice questions as well as items written in alternate formats. These formats may include, but are not limited to: multiple responses, fill-in-the-blank calculations, and drag-and-drop/Ordered response questions. All item formats, including standard multiple-choice questions, may include exhibits and graphics.

NCLEX Exam Content

The content is organized around four categories of human needs, which have been identified by the NCSBN. The four
categories and their related subcategories are as follows:

• Safe, effective care environment
—Management of care
—Safety and infection control
• Health promotion and maintenance
—Growth and development through the lifespan
—Prevention and early detection of disease
• Psychosocial integrity
—Coping and adaptation
—Psychosocial adaptation
• Physiological integrity
—Basic care and comfort
—Pharmacological and parenteral therapies
—Reduction of risk potential
—Physiological adaptation

Each of these subcategories constitutes 5–13% of the test except for Reduction of Risk Potential and Physiological
Adaptation each of which accounts for 12–18% of the total questions.

The content of the 2019 NCLEX-RN® Test Plan and the 2020 NCLEX-PN® Test Plan is organized into four major Client Needs categories. Two of the four categories are divided into subcategories.
