Academic Areas, Exam Descriptions, and Details
#1 English Language (160 minutes)
- Grammar: Important grammatical terms and uses in grammar, common grammatical errors, parts of speech
- Reading Comprehension: Health-related reading scenarios – to identify main ideas, understanding of passages and words in context, logical inferences
- Vocabulary and General Knowledge: Words used in healthcare and general settings
#2 Math (50 minutes)
- Basic Math Skills: Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratios and proportions, household measures, etc.
Science (75 minutes)
- Anatomy/Physiology: General A/P terminology, anatomical structures, and systems
- Biology: Water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular functions, photosynthesis
- Chemistry: Physical and chemical matter, the periodic table, chemical equations, reactions, bonding
HESI A2 Exam Overview
- Passing score: 70% or higher on both Reading and Math
- Cost of Test: $40
- Retest Policy: You must wait 30 days before retaking the exam.
- Is the test timed? Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the test
- On test day, you must have a valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, military ID, etc.).
- Create an Evolve account before your scheduled test date. Bring your username and password with you on test day.
- Test scores are valid for two years.

Students can prepare for the HESI A2 Practice Test using the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review Manual. The Review Manual contains a 25-question pre-test at the beginning of the text which helps you assess your areas of strength and weakness before using the text. Applicants can also practice on a 50-question comprehensive post-test, which is included at the back of the text and covers all the subject areas in the exam.
The questions will also include rationales for correct/incorrect answers. There is also an Evolve companion site with two comprehensive practice exams to further assist your review and preparation for the HESI Admission Assessment

What is the HESI A2?
HESI stands for Health Education Systems, Inc., and A2 stands for Admission Assessment. The test is also known by various other names, such as the Evolve Reach, the Evolve Reach A2, and the Evolve Reach HESI. However, most people just call it the HESI. It’s not the name important to this exam, but what it does. HESI A2 is an entrance examination. It’s a diagnostic tool, but it’s also a screening tool.
What sections of the HESI A2 will I take?
Reading comprehension, word use, conclusions, implications, understanding, grammar, vocabulary and general knowledge, biology, chemistry, and math.
Is there a deadline to take the HESI A2?
Yes, the exam must be taken by the application deadline
Is there a minimum score?
Yes, this institution requires a minimum cumulative score of 80%. However, a composite score of 75% and a score of 75% in the EACH section are also required. The Admissions Committee may consider the GPA average when reviewing subsections of the HESI A2 exam that are below 75%.
How Long Are Hesi A2 Scores Good?
Per UTRGV admission policy, HESI A2 scores are valid for one year from the testing date. NOTE: A2 scores are only accepted within one calendar year of the test date.
How many times can I retake the HESI A2?
The HESI A 2 may be taken two times during an admission period (August 1st -January 15th, January 16th –
August 1st). The most recent score will be used.
How long must I wait between HESI A2 attempts?
An applicant must wait 6 weeks between HESI A 2 test dates.
How recent of a HESI A2 score is accepted?
The applicant must re-test if the HESI A2 score is greater than 1 year old
What are the required benchmarks for entry at UTRGV School of Nursing?
As per UTRGV admission policy, applicants to the nursing program must achieve 75% or higher on the required individual components of the HESI Admission Assessment Exam. These components consist of English Language-Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary & knowledge, Math, Anatomy & Physiology, and Critical Thinking.
Does the Testing Center have study materials available for the HESI A2 exam?
The Testing Center does not have study materials for the HESI A2 exam; however, the Evolve Reach Admission Assessment Exam Review (HESI A2) study guide can be purchased online.
What will happen after completing the exam?
Test results are available to you in the test center immediately upon completing the exam. Additionally, test scores and remediation information should be available to you online within 24 hours after completing the test. Online remediation is a free service to help you identify and work on areas to improve after taking a HESI test. After the exam, you will receive an email directing you to Evolve on the main page.
