Official VTNE Practice Test 2026 Question Free Study Guide [PDF]. AAVSB administered the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). Our sample questions and answers will help you improve VTNE Test Prep online.

To become a veterinary technician, you must complete a program accredited by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) that leads to an associate degree after two years. Before being granted a license, most states require veterinary technicians to take and pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). This VTNE Practice Test prepares you to take that examination.

VTNE Practice Test 2026

The VTNE is a multiple-choice examination prepared under a contractual agreement between the AAVSB and the Professional Examination Service (PES).

 Domain-Wise VTNE Practice Test

VTNE Exam Content

The 3-hour (180-minute) VTNE consists of 150 multiple-choice operational questions and 20 multiple-choice pilot questions, both derived from the test specifications. The candidate’s score on the VTNE is based on the candidate’s responses to 150 operational questions; the remaining 20 pilot questions embedded in the test are not counted toward the candidate’s score.

The pilot questions will be used to construct future examinations. In the examination, the pilot questions are not marked differently from the operational questions; thus, candidates cannot distinguish between them.

Scoring the VTNE

After you have completed the test, you will see a pass or fail score on the computer screen. This pass-or-fail score is preliminary, and you will receive an official score through email about three or four weeks after the exam. The VTNE is scored on a scale, so your score will not directly indicate how many questions you answered correctly.

Your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) is converted into a scale of 200 to 800 or a scale of 0 to 100. The scale on which your test is scored depends on the requirements of the state or provincial board to which your results will be sent. On the 200-800 scale, a score of 425 or higher is passing. On the 0 to 100 scale, a score of 76% and higher (depending on your state or province’s standards) is passing (the last three years’ average).

VTNE Study Guide 2026

The AAVSB® recommends that candidates carefully read and understand all the topics covered in the latest handbook (PDF). Candidates may also consult the AAVSB website for additional information about the VTNE.

The AAVSB offers four versions of the VTNE online practice test. The tests are designed to assess your strengths and weaknesses across the nine VTNE domain areas. Each practice test contains 75 questions and is 90 minutes.
