WHMIS Study Guide
What is WHMIS?
WHMIS stands for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is a national (Canadian) hazardous materials classification system designed to provide workplace standards for controlling, handling, storing, and disposing of ‘controlled’ products.
Each province and territory in Canada establishes WHMIS employer requirements within its jurisdiction. In Ontario, these requirements are set out in the WHMIS Regulation 860, which falls under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The Ministry of Labour (MOL) provides provincial enforcement of the WHMIS Regulation.
What’s New in WHMIS?
Under WHMIS 2015, there are key changes to the federal legislation:
- “Controlled Products” are now called “Hazardous Products.”
- New rules and criteria for classifying hazardous chemicals improve the supplier’s ability to indicate the severity of hazards.
- There are different hazard classes/categories and more of them.
- Supplier label requirements include new pictograms for hazard classes, prescribed hazard statements, and signal words.
- Safety data sheets have a new, standardized 16-section format with prescribed information elements.
- Safety data sheets are required to be updated on an ongoing basis as new information about a product becomes available. Updating a safety data sheet every three years is no longer required.
WHMIS Training Program
A WHMIS program is required in all workplaces that may have controlled products. Employers must provide workers with information regarding workplace health and safety hazards. Employees have the right to know of potential dangers that can affect their work
and health.
The main elements of WHMIS are:
- Product classification – products intended for use in the workplace are classified based on their hazardous properties.
- Labels – provide basic information that a worker needs to know to use a hazardous product safely.
What is GHS?
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) is an internationally consistent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information through labels and safety data sheets.
The United Nations have endorsed the GHS standards. They are also being implemented in many other countries including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, and members of the European Union
What is SDS?
Safety Data Sheet is the term GHS uses for Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Safety data sheets (SDSs) – supplement the label with more detailed information about a product’s physical and chemical characteristics, its hazardous properties and necessary handling precautions. supplement the label with more detailed information about a product’s physical and chemical characteristics, its hazardous properties, and necessary handling precautions.
What is the WHMIS Symbol?
Pictograms are graphic images that immediately show the user what type of hazard is present. With a quick glance, you can see, for example, that the product is flammable, or… if it might be a health hazard. See also WHMIS Symbols 2024 with meanings [New Updated]
