CNA Actual Exam Overview

CNA certification requirements vary by state. The requirements generally include:

• Complete an accredited CNA course
• Pass the state’s CNA exam, consisting of written and practical portions
• Register as a CNA within the state
• Acquire a minimum number of hours of supervised on-duty experience

1. NNAAP CNA Exam

Once these requirements are completed, the person will be certified in their state. Moving to a different state requires recertification in the new state unless both states use the NNAAP standard. In that case, the new state accepts previous NNAAP (National Nurse Aide Assessment Program) test scores and allows registration.

The state distributes these certification exams. The American Red Cross and other providers provide classes to study for these exams. The Red Cross courses encompass everything in the state exams, from communication to health terms to sensitivity.

In the United States, CNAs must work a minimum number of hours every two years as specified by the state and have no records of abuse or neglect to keep their certification. Each state also requires CNAs to fulfill mandatory continuing education hours.

2. PROMETRIC CNA Exam

You must pass the clinical skills and written exams within 2 years of your first test date. If you do not pass both parts of the exam within 2 years, you must take both again to be certified. If you fail the clinical skills or written exam 3 times, you must attend a state-approved training program before testing on both parts of the exam again.

Eligibility

Individuals must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma, or be equal to “challenge” the exam without completing an approved training program.

Exam Content

The Florida Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Exam consists of two separate tests: the Clinical Skills Test and the Written (Knowledge) Test. You are not required to pass one test before taking the other; however, first-time testers must register for both.

3. HDMASTER CNA Exam

The knowledge test proctor will log you into the computer to take the knowledge test and give instructions for navigating the screen on the computer. You will have up to ninety (90) minutes to complete the 75-question knowledge test. You will be warned when fifteen (15) minutes remain.

You may not ask questions about the content of the knowledge test, such as, “What does this question mean?” You must score 77% or better to pass the knowledge portion of the test. All test materials must remain in the testing room when you exit. Anyone who takes or tries to take materials or information from the testing room is subject to prosecution; their test will be scored as a failure, and they will be reported.

The Knowledge Test consists of 75 multiple-choice questions. Questions are selected from subject areas based on the approved Nevada Nursing Assistant test plan. The number of questions for each subject area is as follows:
