The Virginia Department of Education has contracted with the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson to create and administer the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment® (VCLA™), which measures the communication and literacy skills necessary for Virginia educators

VCLA Practice Test 2024

The following VCLA Practice Test with Study Guide is designed to help you prepare for and become familiar with the structure and content of the subtests in order to contribute to your effective preparation for a successful test-taking experience. The writing practice tests feature sample responses to the short-answer items, the Writing Summary assignment, and the Writing Composition assignment.

VCLA Exam Format 2024

The VCLA comprises two areas reading and writing. Each area will be assessed by a separate subtest a reading subtest and a writing subtest. The reading subtest contains multiple-choice items. The writing subtest contains multiple-choice items, short-answer items, and two writing assignments a written summary and a written composition.

The VCLA reading subtest consists of approximately 40 multiple-choice items. The VCLA writing subtest consists of approximately 40 multiple-choice items, 3 short-answer items, and 2 writing assignments, including a written summary assignment and a written composition assignment

Links to practice tests for the VCLA reading and writing subtests, in PDF format, are provided below. These practice tests are designed to help you prepare for and become familiar with the structure and content of the subtests in order to contribute to your effective preparation for a successful test-taking experience.

To take the practice test, follow these steps:

  1. Read each multiple-choice question carefully and choose the ONE best answer out of the four answer choices provided.
  2. Record your answer to each question on the Multiple-Choice Answer Sheet provided.
  3. Follow the instructions in “Evaluating Your Performance” to score your test and evaluate and interpret your results.

The Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment® (VCLA™) is composed of two subtests—a reading subtest and a writing subtest. The following PDF document provides a full-length sample VCLA reading and writing subtest consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions in each set.

An Answer Key provides the correct response for each multiple-choice question and a column for tracking your results.
