TABE 2024

The Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) is a basic skills assessment that will determine your strengths and assist you in successfully completing your program. The TABE has three subject areas: reading, Language, and Mathematics.

The assessment is delivered in a multiple-choice format. You may be taking the assessment in a paper-based format or online. There are no short answers or writing assignments. Remember, you cannot fail the TABE.

Effective January 3, 2019, the TABE Reading is no longer required for remediation for the Nursing program. The use of the TABE Reading is optional but is recommended for nursing students.

TABE Exam Format

Before you take a TABE test, you will take a locator test. This will help you and your instructor determine which level of testing is right for you. The locator test will take around an hour to complete.

There are currently four types of TABE tests:

  1. TABE 11&12 – This evaluates learning in line with college and career-readiness standards.
  2. TABE-PC – A version of the TABE test that has been computerized.
  3. TABE-Advanced Level – Aimed at students entering higher education.
  4. TABE CLAS-E – Aimed at students whose first language isn’t English.

TABE tests are used in various adult education settings, including adult basic education classes, adult secondary education (GED preparation), and English literacy (EL) programs run by local organizations and educational agencies, community colleges, correctional institutions, and volunteer literacy programs.

The TABE is a broad achievement test measuring basic Reading, Language, Spelling, and Mathematics skills. Students applying to occupational and technical programs must provide scores from the TABE exam, which is in accordance with the Florida Department of Education’s minimum basic skills requirements.

TABE Study Guide 2024

Remember that the score you will receive on TABE is only one way to measure your skills. TABE will show you the skills you have now and those you need to learn.

Before answering a question, be sure you know what is being asked. For example, a test question might say, “Which of these is not an even number?” If you read the question too quickly, you may miss the word not and answer incorrectly.
