What is the GED® test?

The General Educational Development (GED) tests are a group of four subject tests that, when passed, provide certification that the test taker has the United States or Canadian high school-level academic skills. It is an alternative to the US High school diploma, HiSET, and TASC test.

Who administered GED?

The American Council on Education (ACE), in Washington, D.C. (U.S.), owns the GED trademark, GED®. GED Testing Service is a joint venture of the American Council on Education. The Official Website (www.ged.com) is the sole provider of the official GED® test.

GED Testing Centers:

There are more than 3,200 Official GED Testing Centers in the United States and increasingly in Canada, as well as around the world. Testing centers are most often in adult education centers, community colleges, and public schools. Students in metropolitan areas may be able to choose from several testing locations.

Eligibility Test Eligibility:

Eligibility to take the GED varies by state. However, candidates must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school. In addition, candidates must be 17 years old and state residents in some states.

GED Test Fees

The fees for the GED test vary depending on the state. Generally, the subject’s fees vary from $30 to $35. Therefore, the total fees for the four subject tests would be $120 to $135.

GED Test Languages:

In addition to English, the GED tests are available in Spanish and French in Canada and in large print, audio, and braille.

GED Exam Subjects

The GED® test comprises four exams (Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science).

  1. Maths.
  2. Science.
  3. English Reading/Writing.
  4. Social Studies.
GED Passing Score

The GED exam has a passing score of 145 out of 200 for each subject. You must score 145 on all four subjects to earn your certificate. Be sure to check with your prospective university about the scores required for admission. For example, Arizona State University requires an average subtest score of 500 in addition to the certificate.
